Friends of Writers is hosting a First Annual Spring Gala on May 6, 2013 in New York City to benefit the CHS Scholarship Fund and to celebrate the 70th birthday of Ellen Bryant Voigt. Friends, alumni, MFA Faculty, W. W. Norton, Fourway Books, Graywolf, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt will honor the memory of Carol Houck Smith with an evening of cocktails, dinner, dancing and conversation. The event will be held at the Manhattan Penthouse, 17th Floor, 80 Fifth Avenue. Special guests: Bill Irwin, Meryl Streep, & Friends!
During her 60-year career at W.W. Norton, Carol Houck Smith edited and encouraged generations of the nation’s most distinguished poets and writers, including Ellen Bryant Voigt and many members of The MFA community. Ms. Smith was known for her passionate commitment to seeking out talent, nurturing new authors, and coaxing them to perfect their work.
The CHS Scholarship Fund was established with seed money bequeathed by Ms. Smith as an expression of her admiration for the Program. When fully endowed the fund will support a promising writer during the final semester of study.
Individual tickets to the Gala are $250 and seating is limited. An email invitation will be sent to alumni and our WW MFA community in late March, or email gala@friendsofwriters.org for more information and tickets now.
